When to Take CBD Oil for Sleep

If you haven’t already heard, sleep is one of the most important aspects of our health and wellness. Without a good night’s sleep, we lose cognitive and physical function. Not to mention, studies show that lack of sleep may be linked to complications such as coronary heart disease, obesity, and metabolic syndromes such as diabetes (5). We need sleep to function, but many people close their eyes and are unable to reach a state of sleep. If you have tried the traditional tips with no relief, you may be looking for other options to try. CBD oil may be the solution you have been looking for. So when to take CBD oil for sleep is the question.

 

When falling asleep is a challenge, most people rush to grab melatonin from the shelves and cabinets. Melatonin is a hormone released within our body at nighttime to regulate our sleep-wake cycles which can be helpful to promote sleep. However, it is already naturally produced in our bodies. If you take too much melatonin supplement it may affect your body’s natural ability to produce this hormone. Therefore, melatonin is not a supplement you should be taking every night and in excess. Especially if your body already produces this hormone, take caution with external supplementation of melatonin. 

 

The other traditional tips are generally recommended and can contribute to good sleep hygiene. For example, electronics should be turned off one hour to 30 minutes before bed because the blue light in your devices can interfere with your ability to produce melatonin. It is also recommended to follow an organized sleep schedule for your body to adjust. These tips without supplementation are good habits to continue, however adding CBD oil to your regimen may be a helpful addition. CBD is a compound that is not naturally produced in your body like melatonin is, so there is no conflicting effect with your body’s natural production ability. CBD is also not the same thing as THC, the active ingredient in recreational marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD oil has no intoxicating effects so it will not get you high. 

So why CBD for sleep? CBD products can be obtained without a prescription and shipped directly to your house. Compared to prescription medications for sleep and insomnia there are fewer side effects to worry about as well. CBD has few reported side effects and does not leave you with that groggy feeling when you wake up that prescription medications typically cause. Lethal doses of CBD have not been reported as in prescription medications. For many who are unable to sleep the issue may be the increased levels of cortisol at night which inhibit the ability to fall asleep at a reasonable hour. Studies show that CBD oil can lower levels of cortisol which can decrease the number of times you wake up in a night. Over the course of three months most of the subjects reported an improvement in their sleep with CBD oil (1). 

Another study found CBD to be an excellent sleep aid in those who have trouble sleeping. The study was double-blind, and placebo controlled which meant that both the participants and the researchers were unaware of who received the placebo versus the CBD oil. The study also noted that this improvement in sleep can also be due to relief of symptoms of disturbances such as pain and discomfort (4). Supplementation has also been shown to decrease feelings of nervousness and racing thoughts which can keep your mind awake. CBD also may contribute to decreased swelling and discomfort that may impair sleep ability.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in a variety of physiological functions which may include regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. The hypothalamus within the brain is a critical component of the endocannabinoid system and is the major regulator of our circadian rhythm (3). CBD’s effect on sleep is dependent on the dose you take, so pay attention to the dosage on the labels. Although there isn’t a specified optimal dose for the best sleep of your life, it is generally based on an individual’s tolerance. When you purchase a product start with a low dose and slowly increase the dose as needed (2). Once you find a dose that works for you, maintain this dose until it no longer works for you. CBD has a low toxicity profile as well which ensures its safety of use. It is also important to be aware of other prescription drugs and herbal supplements you are taking. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about how CBD can affect these other compounds and ask them any other questions you may have. 

 

Once you are convinced CBD is your solution to a good night’s sleep, how can you use it? CBD can come in a variety of formulations, if you want a product that will have a quicker response time try the magic tincture. Use the dropper to place the product under your tongue and leave it underneath for at least 30 seconds. This formulation is more rapidly absorbed than regular pills and capsules which is favorable for a quicker effect. A simpler option is the CBD capsules which you can swallow to see the desired effect. This may take slightly longer to have an effect than the tincture, so you may want to take the capsules an hour to 30 minutes before getting into bed. 

 

If you wish to stray beyond traditional sleep hygiene tips, consider implementing CBD oil into your lifestyle. Familiarize yourself with CBD by talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Ask them where you should start and mention any current medication or supplements you are taking. Do not be afraid to start with the suggested amount on a packaged CBD product and see how you tolerate it. Ditch the melatonin and see how CBD can improve your sleep. Relief is on the way from common sleep disruptors such as racing thoughts and physical discomfort. Life is better when you are well rested and ready for the day ahead of you. Say yes to CBD and enjoy a good night’s sleep.
